Red Facial Skin

Are You Experiencing Red Face While Drinking?   by M Yamamoto

For those people that know about Asian flush syndrome, the main symptom and most popular symptom sufferers get, is a red puffy face after drinking alcohol. It’s by far the most visible and most embarrassing symptom you can get.

In most cases, it’s the first sign of the problem. You probably don’t know you have it until it happens.

Approximately 50% of people of Asian descent have this disorder and don’t even know they have it.

I am of Asian descent and I didn’t know I had this disorder when I started drinking 20 years ago. There was no internet. No books on the subject. Not that I would have looked it up anyway. I was a young kid and just looking for a good time. I wanted to experience the thrill of drinking liquor and feeling loose and free. Alcohol can either make you very crazy or very sleepy. I found out quickly that it made me feel great. I was having a good time until someone told me “you are red as a tomato”. I felt a little flush but wasn’t aware that I was that red. I felt a little sick but I thought it was just the effects of feeling drunk. Not so. I had Asian flush.

I continued to drink throughout the years. Not a lot; just enough to be sociable. I knew when I drank more than a few beers, I would turn red so I stopped at one. I thought it was just my body chemistry. I was just a lightweight as my friends would say.

I think there are a lot of people of Asian descent who are just like me. Not realizing that there was an actual genetic condition that I had that prevented me from drinking too much. In a way, it turned out to be a good thing. Many of my friends throughout the years have had problems handling their liquor and ended up drinking too much on too many occasions. Some have even spent time in prison for drinking while driving.

So I’d like to tell you what the symptoms to look for:

1. Red facial flushing. You already knew this one. Your face will be in various shades of red depending on the severity and number of drinks you had. Also, you may experience swelling, blotches and hot flashes. This may not be limited to your face. It’s possible to have it on your neck, shoulders, ears, and other parts of your body.

2. Headache. This is also very common. Again, I thought this was a sign of drinking one too many.

3. Dizziness.

4. Nausea.

5. Itchy skin.

There are probably a few more but not as common. These are the main ones. As you can tell, you can confuse these symptoms with having too much to drink. In my case, I just decided to stop. Sometimes, the symptoms would go away, sometimes not.

These symptoms may also be confused with an allergic reaction. Although, Asian flush is not considered an allergic reaction to alcohol, it may turn out that you may not have Asian flush after all and you are allergic to alcohol. Check with your doctor to see if this is what you have.

In any case, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it would be best to see a doctor anyway. Asian flush is not a condition to take lightly. Do not continue to drink and ignore these symptoms, it could cause problems long-term.
